Description and Notes
Between January and May 2025, 84 incidents of GPS signal disruption were recorded in marine waters, tripling compared to 27 incidents in the same period in 2024. These GPS interferences mainly occur in the eastern Gulf of Finland near the Russian border. Finnish authorities expect further disruptions during the summer and advise mariners in the area to rely on traditional navigation tools rather than electronic devices. The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency noted a similar rise in GPS interference incidents in airspace. It points to Russian electronic warfare capabilities and their use of jamming to prevent Ukrainian attacks, impacting navigation in the Gulf of Finland and southern Baltic Sea regions.
