Summary

Headline: Latvia-Belarus border to be under enhanced surveillance again

Short Summary: Latvia plans to reinstate enhanced border surveillance with Belarus after a rise in illegal crossings and border infrastructure damage.

Description

The Latvian Ministry of the Interior will reinstate increased border surveillance at the Latvia-Belarus border, less than a month after previously enhanced protection was suspended. This follows a rise in attempted illegal border crossings from Belarus into Latvia and concerns about fifth-column activities and damage to border infrastructure.

Quotes

Once again, the flow of migrants from Belarus to Latvia is increasing. Less than a month after an increased border protection mode was suspended, the Ministry of the Interior will encourage it to reinstate it, Latvian Radio reported Monday, March 4.
State Border Guard Chief Guntis Pujāts said that the influx of migrants was due to 'warmer weather'. There have also been cases of damage to the border infrastructure.
There were 25 attempts to cross the border illegally in February, three are already in 4 March, and others by the beginning of the month.
The Border Guard has already made it that the Ministry of the Interior to restore the reinforced border protection mode. Pujāts thinks it's a matter of the nearest weeks.
News of the flow of migrants towards Latvia from Belarus is followed by Ilva Greiš, border monitoring agent at Security Police for months. She says the accusations are not stopping with agents such as the migrants on convoy, and support activities in the border area itself. Relying on the work of the State Border Guard and other services and higher authorities.
