On February 6, 2024, Latvian government decided not to reopen the Silene border post on the Latvia-Belarus border to prevent threats to internal security amid irregular border crossings.

Taking into account possible threats to Latvia's internal security, the Latvian government announced on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, it would not reinstate the Silene border crossing point on the Latvia-Belarus border. The Silene crossing was closed on September 19, 2023, following the government’s earlier enhanced border guard mode activated from August 11 to February 10, 2024. The closure responded to a decrease in irregular border crossings but remains as a preventive measure against destabilization efforts, particularly those attributed to Russia and Belarus. The Ministry of Interior cited Russia and Belarus's hybrid warfare tactics and the potential risk of destabilization to Latvia and referenced similar border issues experienced between Finland and Russia. The Pāternieki border crossing remains operational.
