NATO Multinational Brigade in Latvia is expanding its presence beyond Adazi military base, focusing on eastern Latvia, particularly Latgale region. Allied troops located in Daugavpils, co-located with the Latvian National Guard's 3rd Latgale Brigade 34th Infantry Battalion, work closely with Latvian forces to strengthen regional defense capabilities. This ongoing deployment reflects a long-term commitment to Latvia's defense, enhancing deterrence against potential aggressors. Exercises such as 'Spring Warrior' with over 3,000 NATO soldiers are conducted across Latvia, including Latgale, to train combat, logistics, and command capabilities. The brigade's presence in Daugavpils has been ongoing for more than six months, with plans to expand similar presences in Aluksne and Rezekne. Since the 2016 NATO Warsaw Summit decision, NATO forces presence in the Baltics and Poland has increased, with the Latvian battlegroup being expanded from a battalion to a brigade level by 2026, expected to exceed 3,500 troops. Notably, on 17 October 2024, command of the Latvian battlegroup was transferred to the NATO Multinational Brigade leadership, marking a significant increase in combative readiness.
