In 2016, Kremlin-linked agents orchestrated staged protests and fed pro-Russian propaganda in Germany, supporting AfD politicians with materials to oppose anti-Russian sanctions.
In early 2016, Russian state-linked actors Mateusz Piskorski and Sargis Mirsachanjan attempted influence operations in Germany to sway public opinion and political discourse. On 28 February 2016, a staged protest occurred in Berlin with anti-Obama and anti-Erdogan slogans, involving Ochsenreiter as a speaker but attracting few participants. The following day, a Pegida protest in Dresden with around 3000 attendees was used to film speeches and distribute Russian-language posters, while Russian media were fed narratives portraying these events as anti-Western. Further, Ausfa documents authored/coordinated by Ochsenreiter were passed to AfD politician Udo Stein, including draft resolutions to end anti-Russian sanctions alleged to damage the Baden-Württemberg economy. Russian media amplified these messages with translated documents and arranged press conferences featuring AfD figures. This operation sought to manipulate German political movements for Kremlin interests.
Confidence: High
The article clearly describes Kremlin-linked actors organizing staged protests, manipulating political actors, and orchestrating propaganda targeting Germany in 2016, demonstrating hostile influence and political subversion operations.
