In July 1985, Baltic organizations held a Tribunal accusing the Soviet Union of illegal occupation, atrocities, and genocide in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, culminating in the Copenhagen Manifesto verdict.
On July 25 and 26, 1985, the Baltic World Conference, representing central Baltic organizations in the free world—the Estonian World Council, the World Federation of Free Latvians, and the Supreme Committee for Liberation of Lithuania—held a Tribunal against the government of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The Tribunal aimed to highlight the illegal Soviet occupation of the independent Baltic republics (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania), document atrocities and genocide against the Baltic people, and condemn the Soviet Union for these acts against humanity. Sixteen witnesses testified before a panel of human rights authorities who issued the Copenhagen Manifesto as the verdict of the Tribunal. This publication compiles the indictment, backgrounds, testimonies, and the verdict to serve as historical documentation and information on human rights and freedom realization.
Confidence: Medium
Aggressor true: the content explicitly describes Soviet illegal occupation of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, along with atrocities and genocide against Baltic peoples. signal_type HYBRID_SIGNAL: although framed through a tribunal and legal condemnation, the substantive subject is hostile Soviet occupation and political/legal subversion rather than a defensive preparation measure.
