Latvian authorities discovered the first illegal underground migrant tunnel near Silene at the Belarus border on August 10, 2026, with 15 migrants entering illegally. They were returned to Belarus. Full border scans and 24/7 drone surveillance have been ordered.
On August 10, 2026, in the parish of Skrudaliena, Augšdaugava municipality, Latvia, the first illegal underground tunnel was discovered near the Belarus border. The tunnel was used by 15 migrants who entered Latvia illegally from Belarus. The underground passage was found 10 meters from the border fence. This discovery resulted from a joint operation by the Latvian State Border Guard, police, National Armed Forces, and Lithuanian Border Guard dog handlers. The migrants, wearing sandy-colored clothing, were apprehended and returned to Belarus. Prior to this, migrants mostly attempted to cross by scaling the fence. Latvian Interior Minister Jānis Dombrava instructed the Ministry of the Interior to conduct ground scans along the border for other tunnels. Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs emphasized constant drone surveillance 24/7. Similar tunnels have previously been found in Lithuania, the first discovered in 2025, probably intended for illegal migrant crossings from Belarus.
Confidence: Medium
The use of underground tunnels by migrants to cross the border illegally, likely facilitated or tolerated by Belarus, indicates a hostile hybrid-warfare tactic designed to destabilize Latvia by exploiting unauthorized migration routes.
