NATO Base Geilenkirchen Raises Security to Second-Highest Alert Level ‘Charlie’ Due to Possible Threat

On August 22, 2024, the NATO Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) base at Geilenkirchen in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, was placed on alert level 'Charlie,' signaling an imminent or very likely terrorist threat. This elevated security status resulted in sending home about half of the base's roughly 1,600 staff as a precaution while maintaining full operational capability, including ongoing AWACS flight missions. The base is critical for NATO’s air and maritime surveillance and command, operating 14 modified Boeing 707 AWACS aircraft also deployed near NATO’s eastern borders with Russia and Ukraine. The reason for the alert remains classified; however, rumors of drone incursions have been denied by base officials. This heightened alert comes amid a wave of suspected sabotage attempts at German military facilities, though officials deny a direct link.
