In December 2025, a Belarusian banker known for his affinity for Moscow's Bolshoi Theater allegedly threatened the CEO of Euroclear, a major financial securities clearing firm headquartered in Belgium, as the EU was negotiating the freezing of Russian state assets to pressure Russia over its war in Ukraine. The banker, linked to Russian interests, reportedly warned of consequences if the assets frozen in Belgium were not released, suggesting attempts to intimidate EU financial institutions involved in sanctioning Russia. This incident underscores ongoing hybrid warfare tactics involving economic coercion and corruption threats targeting EU officials and institutions. The banker’s intimidating conduct came amid growing EU scrutiny and attempts to hold Russia financially accountable by freezing billions of euros in assets. Euroclear officials disclosed the threats to Belgian authorities and EU bodies, who are investigating potential links to Russian influence operations. The case highlights vulnerabilities in European financial centers to hybrid subversion, including intimidation of key actors in the asset freeze chain. The incident aligns with broader Russian hybrid warfare efforts aimed at undermining EU unity through corruption and financial pressure.
