Latvian citizen is prosecuted for spying, having shared detailed Latvian military intelligence with Russian military intelligence; suspect arrested and in custody.
On December 30, 2025, Latvia's State Security Service (VDD) requested the prosecutor's office to initiate criminal proceedings against a Latvian citizen for illegally gathering and transmitting information about Latvian military facilities to the Russian military intelligence service. The suspect was detained on August 27, 2025. Criminal proceedings were initiated on August 21, 2025, under Article 85 of the Criminal Law for illegal collection and transfer of intelligence to a foreign intelligence service. The VDD investigation identified multiple instances of intelligence sharing, including details on the location, layout, and security measures of military facilities and weapons depots, information on construction of new military facilities, soldier training, and the presence of NATO soldiers at Latvian bases. The suspect also provided additional sensitive information potentially harmful to Latvia and Baltic security interests. Coordination and transmission of intelligence reports were done via the Telegram app. The suspect is remanded in custody. The service reminded that the suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty by law.
Confidence: High
Clear evidence that a Latvian citizen intentionally gathered and transmitted military intelligence to Russian military intelligence service, violating Latvian criminal law and directly threatening national security.
