Estonia received its first IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defence missile system on June 22, 2026, enhancing its capability to defend against air threats at greater distances and altitudes. The system is procured from German Diehl Defence and will improve Estonia's and NATO's air defence capabilities.
On June 22, 2026, the Estonian Air Defence Wing received its first IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defence missile system at Ämari Air Base. The IRIS-T SLM, procured from German company Diehl Defence through the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI), provides Estonia with the capability to engage air threats at greater distances (up to approximately 40 km) and altitudes (up to 20 km) than existing short-range systems. This system improves air defence by restricting adversaries' air attack assets, is tactically agile, and can be rapidly repositioned. It is designed to defend against aircraft, helicopters, and cruise missiles. The Estonian Defence Forces will receive a total of three firing units, with the remainder expected next year. The delivery improves Estonia's national defence and NATO's collective security. The Air Defence Wing was established in July 2023 and contributes to airspace inviolability through active air defence operations and conscript training.
Confidence: High
The signal reports a defensive enhancement via acquisition and deployment of air defence missile systems by Estonia, a NATO member, without indications of hostile or aggressive actions.
