German journalist exposed Kremlin agents recruiting local operatives via Telegram for espionage tasks in Germany, involving a pro-Russian politician's engagement.
German journalist Angelique Geray posed as a Putin supporter under the fake identity 'Katya' running a channel for several months. Through this channel, she was contacted by Kremlin agents who assigned her tasks to photograph sites in Germany, monitor members of the CDU party, arms companies, and NGOs, and collect personal data of their employees. Recruitment began with small tasks for small payments and escalated to more serious assignments. Communication was conducted mainly via Telegram with compartmentalized knowledge among operatives. German politician Jovica Jovitch from the pro-Russian Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance engaged with the channel, advising provocative content such as a video dancing on a NATO flag. Jovitch vaguely acknowledged practical links to Russian intelligence but later denied any connections. After Geray revealed her true identity, she received death threats from unknown individuals.
Confidence: High
Detailed firsthand evidence from a prolonged undercover operation exposing active recruitment and espionage effort by Kremlin agents in Germany with complicity from a pro-Russian politician indicates clear hostile intelligence activity.
