More cyberattacks targeting German seaports since the start of the Russian war

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, German seaports have increasingly become targets of cyberattacks. The Hamburg Port Authority disclosed that cyberattacks on the Hamburg harbor have risen over 100 times. Partner ports including Barcelona, Singapore, and Los Angeles collaborate with HPA to share countermeasures and protection strategies. Bremenports and ports in Bremerhaven and Wilhelmshaven report similar trends, with mostly automated, less targeted attacks that can be intercepted by current defenses. Larger-scale attacks have been timely identified and blocked with help from Germany's Federal Office for Information Security. The cyberattacks' perpetrators remain unknown or use obscured origins, but many are suspected to be foreign, including possible cyberterrorism and espionage. Official port operators in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern gave no public comment. The Federal Ministry of the Interior notes a recent increase in cybercrime offenses aimed at computer systems and networks, especially from foreign or unknown sources.
