On June 17, 2025, Latvia decided to increase its National Armed Forces by 500 soldiers starting July 1, 2025, to strengthen defense capabilities and align with NATO targets.
Latvia announced plans to almost immediately expand its National Armed Forces by 500 soldiers effective July 1, 2025. According to a decision by the Cabinet of Ministers, this increase will bring the overall number of soldiers to 8,000 in 2025. Defense Minister Andris Sprūds stated this expansion aims to strengthen Latvia's professional military units and further integrate them into NATO's defense structure. The expansion includes 500 new professional soldiers assigned mainly to the Mechanised Brigade of the Land Forces, including infantry combat vehicle crews, air defense, and artillery units, alongside additional cadet placements at the National Defence Academy. Financial provisions for remuneration will be reorganized within the Ministry of Defence's budget, including reallocations from existing budget programs and using 432 vacancy bank positions in public administration, as well as increasing total public administration positions by 68. This expansion reflects Latvia's rapid pace of defense development in response to regional security challenges.
Confidence: High
This event describes Latvia's internal defense strengthening effort by increasing the number of professional soldiers in the National Armed Forces as part of NATO-aligned capability goals. There is no indication of aggressor activity; it is a clear defense preparation measure with official government decisions and defense minister statements.
