Debunk.org analysis uncovers 'Russkaya Litva,' a large Lithuanian Facebook pro-Kremlin disinformation network with bot accounts, active since before 2014, amplifying Russian propaganda on social media until Facebook removal in 2022.
Debunk.org's research into Lithuania-based pro-Kremlin disinformation found the Facebook page 'Russkaya Litva' to be a principal channel spreading Russian World narratives, with 100,000 followers and tens of millions of views by June 2022. The page, run by ‘Vladimiras K.’, operated numerous fake accounts across platforms, boosting anti-Western content and disinformation for at least eight years. Notably, inauthentic engagement spiked following Russia's 2022 Ukraine invasion, with a shared video of Sergey Lavrov's speech receiving 73,000 reactions and 2.5 million views, most artificially generated. Many follower profiles were likely bots or fake Ukrainian accounts created with SIM cards, sharing suspiciously overlapping likes for fake 'Ukrainian woman' profiles. Coordination with Meta led to the shutdown of main Facebook pages, but bot accounts remained active. The administrator shifted to other pages and platforms, which continue disseminating propaganda. This case parallels large Russian bot farms dismantled by Ukrainian authorities in 2022, highlighting ongoing Russian efforts to manipulate social media opinions in Baltic states and beyond.
Confidence: High
The source clearly documents a specific pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign involving Russian-aligned actors using bots and fake accounts to manipulate social media narratives targeting Lithuania, aligning with hostile hybrid warfare operations.
