In October 2024, Estonian authorities received a fabricated Chinese report aiming to disrupt the Balticconnector sabotage investigation, raising concerns of disinformation attempts.
In October 2024, Estonian authorities received a mock report allegedly from a Chinese entity attempting to influence the investigation into the Balticconnector pipeline incident. The report surfaced amid ongoing inquiries into the pipeline sabotage between Estonia and Finland. The staged document aimed to introduce disinformation, clouding the facts and complicating the investigation process. The Balticconnector is a key infrastructure for Baltic-Finnish gas supply, and the sabotage had raised concerns about geopolitical sabotage. Estonian officials remain cautious and emphasize the need for thorough verification amid attempts to manipulate the narrative.
Confidence: High
The event clearly describes a hostile action involving the presentation of a fabricated, likely Chinese, report aimed at subverting the investigation of a critical infrastructure sabotage incident in Estonia. This is an example of political and informational subversion as part of hybrid warfare, thus classifying it as an aggressor event with high confidence.
