Pro-Russian hackers launched DDoS cyberattacks targeting Danish political party websites and media on the eve of local elections, aiming to disrupt election coverage.
On the eve of local and regional elections in Denmark, several Danish political party websites, including the Conservatives and Red-Green Alliance, and the Copenhagen Post online newspaper, were targeted by a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) cyberattack. Pro-Russian hackers claiming responsibility via social media called themselves NoName057(16) and targeted multiple Danish political sites and public broadcaster DR, although DR reported no operational impact. Denmark's Defence Intelligence Service informed AFP that the cyberattack was likely aimed at the coverage of the 18 November elections. The military intelligence service and Denmark's intelligence agency had warned about a high likelihood of such cyberattacks ahead of the elections. The military intelligence service noted close monitoring of the situation but no immediate response from the country’s civil protection agency to AFP's request for comment.
Confidence: High
The attack was a coordinated, deliberate cyberoperation by a pro-Russian hacker group targeting election-related political and media websites, aiming to disrupt democratic processes which qualifies as hostile hybrid warfare activity.
