Lithuania is a gateway for sanctioned shipments to Russia – LRT Investigation

Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, at least 130 million euros worth of dual-use goods have passed through Lithuania en route to Russia. These shipments are routed via countries such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan, effectively circumventing EU and Western sanctions. Lithuanian companies involved often claim lack of knowledge that the dual-use goods and technologies would ultimately end up in Russia. The investigation reveals that despite sanctions, loopholes and indirect routes through third countries facilitate the continuation of such trade. The shipments include electronic components and technologies that can potentially support Russian military capabilities. Lithuanian customs and port authorities remain aware but face challenges in enforcement due to the complex transshipment routes.
