From November 20 to 22, 2024, several small, unidentified drones were detected around three UK airbases according to the United States Air Force (USAF). The bases involved were RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, and RAF Feltwell in Norfolk, England. USAF and installation leaders monitored the drones actively and concluded that the incursions did not impact base residents or critical infrastructure. Lakenheath hosts the 48th Fighter Wing, a key US combat force in Europe, while Mildenhall hosts the 100th Air Refueling Wing and Feltwell supports housing and community services. The US Air Force refrained from disclosing security specifics but emphasized coordination with host-nation authorities. This drone activity took place during a week marked by Ukrainian strikes inside Russia and the launch of an intermediate-range ballistic missile by Russia, heightening regional security concerns. The nature and origin of the drones are not definitively known, and no hostile intent has been confirmed.
