Lithuanian authorities are on high alert after a massive data leak involving over 600,000 entries from national data registers, suspected to involve a foreign country.
Lithuanian authorities announced a massive data leak involving more than 600,000 entries from national data registers, mainly relating to real estate and legal entities. The leak was executed by using login credentials of authorized institutions. The head of the State Enterprise Centre of Registers, Adrijus Jusas, resigned following the leak. Cybersecurity measures including blocking accounts and requiring credential updates have been implemented. The general prosecutor's office suspects involvement by a foreign country but did not specify which. Lithuania, with a population of 2.9 million, is considered a key target in Russia's hybrid war against Europe, involving sabotage and influence operations. Opposition politician Laurynas Kasčiūnas claimed on social media the data theft is a Russian intelligence operation, without providing evidence, warning that sensitive addresses of intelligence, military, diplomatic, and political figures could have been accessed to enable espionage or pressure.
Confidence: High
A massive leak of sensitive national data registers attributed to malicious unauthorized access using institutional credentials with a foreign country suspected, combined with contextual knowledge that Lithuania is targeted in hybrid war by Russia, influences classification as a hostile hybrid warfare cyberattack.
