An underground tunnel from Belarus was discovered being dug into Lithuania near Peščiai village, likely for migrant smuggling. The tunnel was filled in and an investigation started.
Lithuanian border guards discovered an underground tunnel being dug from Belarus into Lithuania near the village of Peščiai in Varėna District. The tunnel was about one meter in diameter and 1.5 meters deep, extending approximately five meters into Lithuania but had not yet reached an exit on Lithuanian territory. The tunnel was filled in, and authorities believe it was intended to smuggle migrants. This incident follows multiple tunnel discoveries by Lithuanian border guards this year (April 6, May 6, May 26) as well as several in 2025 on Polish and Lithuanian borders. A pre-trial investigation has been launched.
Confidence: High
Discovery of cross-border underground tunnel used presumably for illicit smuggling of migrants constitutes a covert hostile paramilitary tactic aimed at breaching border security, consistent with hybrid warfare methods.
