Lithuanian MPs call to revoke Russian oppositionist Leonid Volkov's residency after his critical messages about Ukraine's leaders and the Russian Volunteer Corps leader.
On January 6, 2026, several Lithuanian MPs proposed revoking the residency of Leonid Volkov, a Russian opposition figure residing in Lithuania, following his public criticism of Ukrainian officials. Volkov, previously associated with Alexei Navalny and the Anti-Corruption Foundation, had been accused of endorsing the reported killing of Denis Kapustin, leader of the Russian Volunteer Corps known for cross-border raids into Russia and far-right activism. The killing was later revealed as staged by Ukrainian military intelligence to prevent a Russian assassination attempt. Lithuanian authorities, including the Migration Department and State Security Department, have been asked to investigate Volkov's statements for potential threats to state security. Lithuanian politicians, including Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Remigijus Motuzas and opposition leader Laurynas Kasčiūnas, expressed concern about Lithuania becoming a haven for controversial Russian figures and called for policy reviews. Volkov responded that his messages were emotional and meant for a former colleague, reaffirmed his opposition to Putin's regime and condemned the war on Ukraine. Volkov has legal residency and suffered a violent attack near his Vilnius home in March 2023.
Confidence: High
Classified as defense preparation because the event describes Lithuanian government institutions evaluating a potential security risk posed by a foreign resident's statements. No hostile aggressor action is described; it concerns state security and legal subversion precautions.
