A fire suspected as arson destroyed tons of aid supplies for Ukraine stored at a Frankfurt school. Over 300 firefighters battled the blaze for 19 hours. The aid included medical, rescue equipment, and wood stoves. The politically motivated motive is under investigation.
On the night leading to Friday, a fire broke out at a school premises in the Dornbusch district of Frankfurt am Main, Germany, destroying tons of aid supplies intended for Ukrainian civilians. The supplies belonged to the association 'Frankfurt for Ukraine' and were to be transported to Ukraine in the following weeks. The Frankfurt Criminal Police suspect arson and have involved the state security department to investigate a possible political motive. More than 300 emergency personnel from professional and volunteer fire brigades worked for 19 hours to extinguish the fire under difficult conditions requiring respiratory protection. The destroyed goods included 20 pallets of mostly used items like uniforms, fire extinguishers, bedding, wheelchairs, old medical devices, and wood stoves, essential for heating due to frequent central heating failures in Ukraine. Gift packages for paramedics and nurses containing cold tea and protein bars were also lost. The association has faced hate comments and threats related to its aid efforts for Ukraine, including from both people with Russian connections and German nationals. Despite the loss, the association plans to deliver remaining aid in a transporter provided by the Hessian Ministry of the Interior on October 23. Hessian Interior Minister Roman Poseck condemned the attack if proven politically motivated, describing it as an attack on humanity and solidarity. The number of politically motivated crimes in Hessen reached an all-time high in 2025, with right-wing extremism being the largest category.
Confidence: Medium
The deliberate burning of aid supplies for Ukraine is classified as hostile hybrid warfare activity due to the likely political motive and the context of targeted attacks against Ukraine support within Germany, consistent with tactics of politically motivated terrorism and proxy tactics aimed at destabilization and intimidation.
