A Russian businessman linked to the state owns a large house under construction next to the secretive Swedish Muskö naval base, raising security concerns and highlighting legal loopholes in Swedish foreign property law.
A Russian businessman Stanislav Aleshchenko has initiated construction of a large 600 square meter house on a 1.8 hectare private peninsula at the inlet to the secretive Muskö naval base in the Stockholm archipelago, Sweden. The property, formally owned by his wife Tatiana Sazonova who is a Swedish citizen, is located very close to the Muskö naval base, home to the Swedish Navy Headquarters and several submarine docks built into the bedrock. The purchase of the property was made in August 2017 for 18 million SEK, and Swedish authorities were unable to prevent the acquisition or the ongoing construction due to current legal gaps. The building includes underground levels with a garage, home cinema, and a workshop over 100 square meters. Concerns have been raised by security experts and politicians about risks this poses to Sweden’s security, especially given Stanislav Aleshchenko’s Russian state ties and significant undeclared capital income and tax issues. A proposed new Swedish law to tighten control over foreign real estate acquisitions around sensitive military sites is under governmental review but has loopholes, such as exemptions for people holding dual citizenship (Aleshchenko also holds a Cypriot passport), transfers within marriage, and inheritance. Security Service (Säpo) and other agencies criticize these gaps, stressing the risk of proxy ownership through spouses or shell companies. The property was temporarily seized by the state over Aleshchenko’s tax debt exceeding 200 million SEK, which he has paid, with ongoing appeals in court. The construction work is visibly advanced with vehicles marked from a concrete company present at the quay. The matter has caused political debate on national security legislation and spy risks near secret military infrastructure in Sweden.
Confidence: Medium
Aggressor true: the article describes a Russian state-linked businessman acquiring and building on property next to Sweden’s secretive Muskö naval base, which Swedish officials and security bodies frame as a national-security and espionage risk, though no confirmed espionage act is proven. signal_type HYBRID_SIGNAL: the primary subject is the suspicious property acquisition/construction and associated threat, not Sweden’s proposed legal response.
