On May 20, a Romanian citizen was detained in Krāslava Municipality for transporting 11 persons of Asian origin who illegally crossed the Belarus–Latvia border without valid documents.
During an information check on May 20, 2026, officials of the State Police stopped a Renault vehicle in Dagda Parish, Krāslava Municipality, driven by a Romanian citizen. The vehicle contained 11 persons of Asian origin without valid travel documents, visas, or residence permits, who had previously illegally crossed the Belarus–Latvia border. Criminal proceedings were initiated under Section 285, Paragraph 3¹ of the Criminal Law for illegal transportation of persons across the State border during an enhanced border surveillance regime or State of emergency. The State Border Guard has initiated 44 criminal proceedings this year related to illegal transportation or facilitation of illegal stay, compared to 122 last year.
