Latvia reports that a likely Russian "Geraņ" drone crossed its airspace on 1 November and a second, Ukraine-style UAV intruded and probably crashed in Balvi municipality on the night of 3 November, triggering NATO fighter response amid a broader pattern of foreign drones linked to the Russia–Ukraine war entering Latvian airspace.
According to Latvia's National Armed Forces (NBS), on Sunday 1 November a Russian "Geraņ" (Geran/Shahed-type) unmanned aerial vehicle most likely crossed Latvian airspace over Krāslava and Ludza municipalities and then exited Latvian airspace back across the Latvia–Russia border. NBS used a Blaze interceptor drone against the intruder; Blaze's self-destruction mechanism was deliberately triggered to prevent it from entering Russian airspace, causing an explosion sound heard by local residents. NBS assessed probable Russian origin based on sensor data, information from the interceptor drone, and consultations with Ukrainian partners, but stated they could not determine whether the UAV carried explosives. In a separate incident in the night leading to 3 November, another unmanned aircraft resembling drones used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces was detected in Latvian airspace; its exact type and origin remain unconfirmed. NBS reported this second drone likely crashed in Balvi municipality, where search operations are ongoing. NATO Baltic Air Policing fighters were scrambled in response. An eyewitness video filmed around 00:10 shows blinking lights in the night sky above Krišjāņi village in Balvi municipality. The article situates these events in a pattern of repeated foreign drone incursions into Latvian airspace since 2024, including a Ukrainian drone that crashed in Krāslava municipality in March 2026 during operations against Russia, multiple May 2026 alerts in Latgale and Vidzeme, two drones that struck an empty oil storage facility in Rēzekne, one drone that detonated in Lake Drīdzis, a Russian Shahed drone that crashed in Rēzekne municipality in September 2024 with explosives on board, and two occasions in June and August 2026 when NATO fighters shot down foreign-origin drones in Latvian airspace near Rēzekne–Kārsava and Balvi municipality (Rugāji parish), including an identified Ukrainian UAV that likely entered from Belarus due to Russian electromagnetic warfare.
Confidence: High
The main focus is cross-border drone intrusions into Latvian airspace linked to Russia's war against Ukraine, including a likely Russian Geran-type UAV and another foreign combat-style drone that triggered NATO fighter response. These constitute high-tech military tools used in or spilling over from conflict, matching the 'Drone swarms & UAV surveillance' incident type under Military & Paramilitary Operations. The narrative emphasizes the hostile or risky nature of the incursions and prior st...
