Estonia continues development of a drone detection and countermeasure wall on its eastern border despite lack of some EU funds, with projects funded until 2027. The drone wall aims to enhance national security against drone threats. Additionally, a major migrant crisis is ongoing in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta after mass illegal crossings from Morocco.
Estonian Interior Minister Igor Taro and Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) development expert Hanna Heier confirmed that despite the EU funding shortfall for the drone wall project, progress continues with other funding secured until 2027. The Estonian government has so far allocated nearly 12 million euros for the drone wall development, with additional EU funds obtained recently for Eastern border drone detection and countermeasures. The drone wall aims to create a nationwide network for drone detection and neutralization at the eastern border and major cities, to counter threats such as smuggling and ensure security during high-risk events. Meanwhile, Lithuania and Estonia failed to secure EU funding for their planned drone walls on external borders. The article also contains coverage of a migrant crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, with up to 60,000 migrants crossing illegally from Morocco, causing border security strain and political controversy involving Italy, Spain, and EU Schengen policy debate.
Confidence: High
The report details ongoing development of defensive drone detection and countermeasure capabilities by Estonian security authorities and government funding plans. The drone wall is a national defense and border security enhancement project, not an act of hostility or aggression.
