Turkey intercepted and shot down a drone that violated its airspace near Çankırı, about 120 km from Ankara, on 15 December 2025. Over the following five days, two additional crashed drones were found near Istanbul and Balıkesir. The drone found near Kocaeli was identified as a Russian-made Orlan-10 reconnaissance UAV, while the origin of the Balıkesir drone remains under investigation. These incidents are linked to spillover effects of the Russia-Ukraine war impacting the Black Sea region's security. Turkish authorities have warned both Russia and Ukraine to avoid actions endangering Black Sea security. The events raised questions about Turkey's air defense readiness, which the Ministry of National Defense defended, citing functioning radar, early warning, electronic warfare, and interception systems in a layered architecture. The incidents come amid increased attacks on vessels in the Black Sea, including merchant ships, some linked to Russia's shadow fleet and Turkish companies, prompting Turkey's president to call for restraint from both parties.
