Latvia's State Border Guard (NBS) disclosed proof on January 14, 2024, directly linking Belarusian authorities to the orchestration of illegal migration into Latvia. As part of border enforcement measures, Belarusian military-related documents and communication equipment were found on detainees who violated the border. Further incriminating images were recovered from mobile devices, depicting Belarusian border guards alongside migrants inside military-type transport vehicles. This constitutes clear evidence of Belarusian state actors facilitating illegal border crossings, likely as part of hybrid warfare tactics to destabilize Latvia and the wider region. The discovery raises serious concerns about Belarus's use of migration flows as a weapon and reflects ongoing regional tensions on the EU’s eastern flank.
