Swedish authorities have intensified their actions against the Russian shadow fleet transporting oil near Sweden's coast despite ongoing boardings and sanctions. In 2026 alone, 262 sanctioned shadow vessels have transported Russian oil through the Baltic Sea close to Sweden. The majority of the oil is destined for India, where it is refined and sometimes resold to Europe, a process called 'oil laundering.' Swedish Coast Guard, Military, and Security Police are involved in risky boarding operations. The Swedish Air Force is on standby with fighter jets for possible escalation. The Russian military presence in the Baltic Sea has increased, with warships ready to support the shadow fleet, raising the risk of military confrontation. The shadow fleet mainly flies African flags such as Sierra Leone and Cameroon, frequently changing ownership through one-ship companies from Seychelles, UAE, and Hong Kong. The average age of these tankers is over 19 years, older than the typical safety threshold. Sweden insists its operations aim to maintain order and enforce laws in the Baltic Sea amid a new security climate sparked by Russia.
