NATO conducted its largest digital backbone experiment DiBaX 2025 in Latvia, testing next-generation command and control capabilities integrating drones, AI, 5G, and sensors in an aggressive, contested environment inspired by Ukraine conflict dynamics.
From October 27 to November 7, 2023, the largest NATO digital backbone experiment DiBaX 2025 took place in Ādaži, Latvia, and remotely across several NATO member states. Its purpose was to test how drones, artificial intelligence, 5G technology, and sensors operate in a unified command and control system under aggressive and disrupted environments resembling conditions observed in Ukraine. Latvia has hosted this experiment for four years. The Ministry of Defence of Latvia, Latvian National Armed Forces, and LMT provided the environment to allow allies to test solutions in real field conditions. The experiment was led by NATO Allied Command Transformation in cooperation with Latvia. Solutions tested during this event will be analyzed for potential adoption as NATO standards.
Confidence: High
The event describes a NATO-led defensive military technology experiment focused on testing and integrating advanced command and control systems, drones, and AI in a contested environment, demonstrating preparations rather than hostile acts.
