Latvia has significantly strengthened its air defense along its eastern borders with Belarus and Russia following drone incursions, integrating advanced NATO cooperation, domestic counter-drone technologies, and US-Polish support for modern missile systems and electronic warfare.
Since the Gaigalava drone incident on September 7, 2024, Latvia has enhanced its air defense capabilities along its eastern borders with Belarus and Russia. The Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS) maintain 24/7 mobile groups ready to intercept drones with RBS 70 missile systems along the Belarus border and since April 21, 2026, the operation expanded along the entire external border with Belarus and Russia. Latvia participates in NATO's Eastern Sentry operation since September 2025, which was initiated following mass drone incursions into Polish airspace. This participation grants extended Baltic Air Policing Mission authorities allowing allies to intercept drones over Latvian airspace. Latvia's rapid response capabilities allow restricting or closing airspace within 15 minutes nationwide, supported by cooperation with Latvian Air Traffic and Civil Aviation Authority. A restricted flight zone operates daily from 18:00 to 05:00 in eastern Latvia since February 19, 2026. Latvia established a Drone Autonomous Systems Competence Center in 2025 to develop counter-drone technologies and has integrated domestically produced Origin Robotics interceptor drones into active border defense operations. Acoustic drone detection systems deployed along the eastern border enable continuous 24/7 air threat monitoring. Latvia pursues research and development partnerships with domestic defense companies to develop next-generation counter-drone technologies including electronic warfare, guided missiles, and adapted weapons. US and Polish partnerships enhance Latvia’s air defense with modern electronic warfare systems, radars, command and communication systems, MANPAD PIORUN systems, and helicopter-mounted machine guns capable of engaging air targets. By 2030, Latvia aims to field seven air defense battle groups equipped with integrated sensors, electronic warfare, command, interception systems including RBS-70 NG, Giraffe 1X radars, IRIS-T SLM systems, and MEROPS AS3 interceptors used and tested in Ukraine.
Confidence: High
The information details Latvia's defensive preparations and capability upgrades following hostile drone incursions with extensive cooperation with NATO and allied partners. There is no direct indication of hostile offensive activity from Latvia side.
