A human smuggler fleeing Latvian border guards caused a serious traffic accident in Augšdaugava Municipality on May 13, 2026.
On May 13, 2026, a driver identified as a 'carrier' illegally transporting persons who crossed the Belarus–Latvia border fled from Latvian border guards along Krāslava–Dagda road and Krāslava city, performing dangerous maneuvers and speeding. The vehicle crashed into a border guard vehicle in Naujenes Parish, Augšdaugava Municipality, injuring several passengers and causing damage to three vehicles. The driver, an Uzbek citizen without a valid driver's license, was transporting two Indian and two Iranian nationals lacking valid documents. Emergency services responded, and criminal proceedings were initiated under Section 285, Paragraph 3 for organized illegal border crossing. This was the third similar pursuit in a week involving 'carriers' fleeing border authorities with use of firearms reported in prior cases.
