Latvia's government allocated over 180,000 euros to Riga Airport for acquisition of anti-drone equipment and UAVs, following drone incidents threatening civil aviation safety.
On April 15, 2025, the Latvian government approved the allocation of more than 180,000 euros to Riga Airport for purchasing anti-drone systems and drones to enhance civil aviation security. This funding is part of a broader budget distribution totaling 672,418 euros to major Latvian airports including Liepaja and Ventspils for aviation safety, rescue, and civil-military cooperation. Riga Airport will use 30,000 euros for portable anti-drone systems, 105,000 euros for three drones for security and fire safety, 50,000 euros for three additional drones for patrols, and 12,000 euros for thermal cameras. Additional funds are allocated for staff training and firefighting vehicle co-financing. This investment responds to recent drone incidents: a drone from Russia fell near Latvia's border in September 2024, and in January 2025, drone activity near Riga Airport disrupted three inbound flights. The Civil Aviation Agency indicates these drones had deactivated detection functions, suggesting intentional interference to threaten aviation safety. Following these events, Latvia empowered police to shoot down or land drones and use explosives if necessary. Further defense investments of 3 to 5 million euros are planned for Riga Airport over the year to improve drone defenses, including installation of detection equipment and development of protective guidelines under a planned civil aviation competence center.
Confidence: High
The article reports government actions and budget allocations focused on defense and protection measures against drone threats at civil aviation facilities, not offensive or hostile aggressor activity.
