Latvia plans to reinstate enhanced border surveillance on the Latvia-Belarus border due to increasing illegal migrant crossings reported in early 2024, following suspension less than a month ago.
Latvia announced on March 4, 2024, that it would reintroduce reinforced border protection along its border with Belarus amid growing migrant crossings and damage to border infrastructure. State Border Guard chief Guntis Pujāts characterized the influx as linked to warmer weather and rising illegal attempts, with 75 incidents in February and 45 already in March. The Ministry of Interior is working to restore enhanced surveillance and is coordinating with the police and National Armed Forces to address the situation promptly. The enhanced security mode was originally implemented on February 11 but was suspended less than a month before the March announcement. Anna Grīke, border monitoring expert, noted migrant flows continue with no intention of border activities expanding beyond existing agencies. Humanitarian exceptions remain for refugees crossing legally. Authorities remain vigilant as numbers are forecasted to grow, emphasizing it will be a matter of weeks to stabilize the border control.
Confidence: High
The event describes increasing migrant pressure from Belarus (hostile hybrid tactic) prompting Latvia to reinstate enhanced reinforced border protection as a defensive military and paramilitary response; thus, it includes aggressor activity (migrant pressure) and defense preparation (border security measures).
