The German Federal Public Prosecutor's Office announced the arrest of a 53-year-old Ukrainian man in Hagen, Germany, on suspicion of acting as a spy for a Russian intelligence service. Arrested on Friday, he is accused of collecting information about a target in Germany who has participated in fighting for Ukraine since the Russian invasion began. The espionage appears aimed at enabling further intelligence operations against the target in Germany. This arrest is distinct from prior related arrests in North Rhine-Westphalia and Spain involving other suspects spying on persons supplying drones to Ukraine. German security officials report a sharp rise in espionage, sabotage, and disinformation activities by Russian state and state-controlled actors, with a noted tactic of recruiting criminals to carry out operations as traditional spy activities become harder due to sanctions and improved Western counterintelligence measures.
