Latvian authorities detained a couple suspected of spying for the Russian GRU by collecting and passing sensitive defense intelligence, including aerial reconnaissance of a military base.
Latvian State Security Service (VDD), cooperating with the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIDD), detained a couple on suspicion of illegally collecting and passing classified information about Latvia's defense sector to the Russian military intelligence service (GRU). The criminal case was initiated on June 27, 2026, against the Latvian nationals for gathering and transmitting non-disclosable information to a foreign intelligence service on its behalf. Investigations revealed that the suspects obtained and shared intelligence on Latvia's defense system, NATO allied forces activities, and support provided to Ukraine. This included reconnaissance and aerial photography of the Ādaži military base using a private small aircraft. The suspects also conducted activities to potentially support reconnaissance-saboteur groups within Latvian territory. Searches on the day of detention at three linked sites in Riga and Ādaži led to the confiscation of many data carriers, documents, and notes. The suspects are held in custody as the investigation continues.
Confidence: High
The incident involves direct espionage activities by Russian military intelligence targeting Latvian defense secrets, including reconnaissance, indicating hostile intelligence and hybrid warfare tactics.
