Russian Espionage Network Linked to Ex-Wirecard Executive Marsalek Exposed in Austria and London

On December 7, 2024, Austrian authorities arrested a 48-year-old Bulgarian woman suspected of assisting Jan Marsalek, the fugitive former Wirecard CFO, in alleged Russian espionage operations. The woman is believed to have been part of a large European network of amateur spies directed by Marsalek and his Bulgarian associate Orlin R. A key espionage trial is ongoing in London against six Bulgarians accused of spying for Russia, including surveillance and hacking of investigative journalist Christo Grozev, with some confessing. "Operation Vienna" is the codename for spying activities conducted in Austria, where the arrested woman allegedly exchanged camera memory cards and performed surveillance near Grozev’s residence. The network also reportedly targeted locations in Austria, Montenegro, Spain, and Germany, including a US military base near Stuttgart training Ukrainian soldiers. Marsalek's extensive network and its apparent ease of recruiting local operatives pose serious intelligence challenges for Austria and allied nations.
