On May 16, 2026, Latvian State Border Guard officials stopped 170 persons attempting illegal border crossings from Belarus into Latvia. In total, 3,288 persons have been stopped in such attempts this year. At external borders and within Latvia, 30 offenders were detected, including 14 trespassers at external borders. Entry was denied to five foreigners at Riga Airport Border Control Point, including one Pakistani national who could not justify purpose and conditions of entry, three Belarusians, and one Russian who were denied entry at Grebņeva and Pāternieki Border Control Points due to security reasons; these persons were returned to their countries of departure. Three foreigners, all Uzbek citizens, violated residence conditions (invalid visa or residence permits, overstayed, or lacked valid travel documents) at Terehova and Riga Airport Border Control Points and faced administrative liability. One non-citizen of Latvia was refused exit at Riga Airport for lacking valid travel documents and was banned from leaving the country. Within internal immigration controls, two Estonian citizens were found violating entry or residence conditions. During vehicle and vessel operations, 14 persons were administratively sanctioned or refused entry, including citizens from Belarus (5), Latvia (2), Kazakhstan (2), Uzbekistan (2), Russia (1), Estonia (1), and Serbia (1).
Confidence: Medium
The report concerns activities by Latvian border guards enforcing immigration laws, preventing illegal crossings, and rejecting unauthorized entries or exits, representing defensive and border security measures rather than aggressive hostile actions.
