On June 5, 2026, in Augšdaugava municipality, Latvian border guards detained a French national transporting 14 Asian-origin individuals without valid travel documents at the Belarus-Latvia border. The migrants had illegally crossed from Belarus into Latvia hidden in the cargo compartment of a French-driven Opel truck. A criminal case against the smuggler has been initiated, and the 14 migrants were returned to the Belarus border. Latvian border guards prevented 106 illegal border crossings on that day with 4854 people stopped so far in 2026. The government has extended heightened border security measures near Belarus until June 30, 2026, due to increased illegal migration flows. The border control regime includes Augšdaugava and other specified areas.
