Latvian police arrested several dozen border violators and their transporters using a vehicle painted to mimic an official police car during a pursuit from the Belarus-Latvia border near Aizkraukles novads on October 8, 2024.
On October 8, 2024, Latvian State Police, in cooperation with the State Border Guard, conducted a special plan called 'Slazdi' resulting in the arrest of 46 border violators and their transporters near Aizkraukles novads, specifically in Staburaga pagasts on the Svente-Subate road. The border violators were fleeing from the Belarus-Latvia border in Silene. They used a vehicle with fake police markings, including flashing lights and a license plate stolen from a real police vehicle, to facilitate illegal border crossing transport. Police managed to stop the vehicle by shooting its tires and arrested multiple suspects, though two border violators were shot in the process and remain in stable medical condition. One transporter remains at large, and police are asking the public to report suspicious persons matching a described profile (a man approx. 180 cm tall, light-skinned, light-haired, wearing dark clothes) calling emergency number 112. Traffic was partially blocked due to the operation, and drivers were urged to use alternative routes and follow police instructions.
Confidence: High
Classified as aggressor event because multiple border violators used forged police vehicles to illegally cross from Belarus into Latvia, constituting hostile unlawful activity. Classified as defense event because Latvian police and State Border Guard actively conducted a coordinated law enforcement operation, including pursuit, arrests, and public warnings, reflecting defensive enforcement and border security measures.
