In July 2024, Aleksandr Suranovas was recruited via Telegram to courier parcels from Lithuania to the UK and Poland containing concealed sophisticated incendiary devices filled with nitromethane explosives. Suranovas claims ignorance of the explosives. The operation, run remotely by Russian handlers including individuals known as 'HK' and 'Warrior', involved at least 22 suspects across Lithuania and Poland. Three parcels ignited fires in Leipzig airport, near Warsaw, and in a Birmingham warehouse, causing extensive damage but no injuries. Investigators suspect the plot aimed to intimidate Western support for Ukraine or potentially bring down a cargo plane. The UK, US, and Lithuania coordinated investigation efforts, with the White House reportedly warning Russia to cease such attacks or face consequences. The case exemplifies Russia's evolving hybrid warfare tactics employing criminal networks and proxies to conduct sabotage within Europe while maintaining deniability.
