Reports claim Russia plans to launch sea-based drone attacks using Gerbera drones against Italy, France, and Spain, but Italy denies confirmation.
According to reports from the Spanish newspaper El Mundo and a source close to the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence, Russia is preparing possible drone attacks targeting Mediterranean countries including Italy, France, and Spain. The planned attacks involve the use of Gerbera drones launched from the sea, concealed inside containers on merchant ships. These drones are approximately two meters long, have a wingspan of 2.5 meters, weigh up to 18 kilograms, fly at speeds of up to 160 km/h, and have a range of about 600 kilometers. Their small explosive payload (4-5 kg) is enough to cause fires or damage exposed equipment, potentially disrupting ports or airports temporarily. The information is reportedly shared by US intelligence with European governments following a CIA Director trip to Moscow. Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto has publicly denied confirmation of these plans, calling the alarm baseless and counterproductive.
Confidence: Medium
The report details identified hostile preparations involving Russian use of drones launched covertly from maritime platforms targeting NATO/EU countries, indicating an aggressive hybrid threat. Confirmation from Italian authorities is absent but denials are typical in initial stages of such threats.
