Investigators found a second drone and military explosives near Leipzig-Halle Airport linked to a failed August drone attack on Ukrainian cargo planes; officials suspect a hybrid attack possibly involving Russian intelligence.
Police investigators found an additional drone and military-grade explosive (Hexogen/T4) near Leipzig-Halle Airport, possibly intended for attacks against Ukrainian Antonov cargo planes. The third drone was discovered on August 14, 2026, in Kabelsketal, adjacent to the airport's western section. Previously, on August 4, a drone armed with explosives was found on the airport grounds but failed to detonate due to a defective detonator. The same night, a DHL cargo aircraft collided with an unknown object, initially suspected to be a drone, but later reports suggested it might have been a bird. Near the runway, authorities also found a technical device possibly used to control drones. Officials have not officially identified the perpetrators, but Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt mentioned a 'hybrid attack scenario' with 'foreign powers' possibly involved. Security sources suspect Russian intelligence involvement, which Russia denies. The Federal Prosecutor described the incident as a serious attack on Germany's transport and logistics infrastructure.
Confidence: High
The discovery of multiple drones loaded or associated with military-grade explosives, the intent to target critical cargo aircraft, indications of hostile foreign intelligence involvement, and expert and official statements all point strongly to a hostile hybrid attack scenario.
