Sputnik Latvia editor-in-chief sentenced to two years in prison for violating EU sanctions by providing economic resources through media work for Russian state propaganda agency Rossiya Segodnya.
On December 6, 2024, the first instance court in Latvia sentenced the editor-in-chief of Sputnik Latvia, Rozhentsov, to two years in prison for violating EU sanctions by providing services for Russian state propaganda organizations. Rozhentsov acted as editor-in-chief from October 20, 2016 to December 23, 2019, preparing publications that supported Russian propaganda efforts run by Rossiya Segodnya. The indictment states that Rozhentsov's work supported sanctions-listed CEO Dmitry Kiselev's goals of strengthening Russia's national interests in the information space. Rozhentsov refused to participate in the trial and is currently a fugitive, having changed his residency to custody. The verdict can be appealed to the Riga Regional Court. Prosecutors emphasize the economic nature of the violation as Rozhentsov provided an economic resource to the sanctioned media holding.
Confidence: Medium
The case involves an individual actively circumventing EU sanctions and providing economic resources to a Russian state propaganda agency, facilitating hostile information operations in Latvia, which constitutes a hostile hybrid warfare activity.
