Russian Military Intelligence GRU Suspected in Coordinated Air Cargo Arson Attacks Across Europe

In summer 2024, a sabotage campaign using incendiary devices concealed within legitimate air cargo parcels was executed by a network linked to the Russian military intelligence service GRU. Parcels shipped from Lithuania targeted locations including Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany, Warsaw, Poland, and Birmingham, UK, resulting in fires on July 20-21, 2024. Investigations revealed the plot used 'disposable agents' recruited via Telegram, including a 27-year-old Ukrainian in Poland who activated the incendiaries, and a suspected coordinator Aleksandr S. in Lithuania who dispatched the parcels. Arrests followed in several countries, and senior GRU operative Denis Smolyaninov has been identified as recruiter for these sabotage activities within the EU. The attacks were potentially catastrophic as parcels could have ignited mid-flight, jeopardizing civilian lives. The scheme also included test shipments without incendiaries to USA and Canada to probe transport vulnerabilities. The incidents highlight ongoing Russian hybrid warfare tactics aimed at destabilizing western security using clandestine sabotage against critical transport infrastructure.
