Swedish Navy: Russia protects the 'shadow fleet' with military operation

Russia has, for some time, maintained a naval military operation in the Baltic Sea to shield its so-called 'shadow fleet', vessels suspected of illicit activities. The Russian navy uses warships to guard special zones, with personnel aboard submarines and a presence supported by reconnaissance drones and naval aviation. Swedish Navy operations chief Marko Petkovic stated the operation is now more permanent and extensive. While Sweden has found licensed personnel tied to these vessels, evidence of uniformed military personnel onboard is not confirmed. The Swedish Coast Guard contributes support but does not oversee activities outside Swedish territorial waters, limiting direct engagement.
