Finland seeks 35 million euros EU funding for drone detection and countermeasures on eastern border and Gulf of Finland; buys South Korean K9 howitzers for army modernization.
Finland is seeking 35 million euros in additional funding from the European Commission to acquire technology for preventing and combating drones intruding into its territory, specifically on the eastern border and in the Gulf of Finland. The Border Guard will use the funding to obtain drone detection and countermeasure systems. The acquisition is expected to mainly occur during 2027-2029, with the European Commission covering 90% of costs via the Border Management and Visa Policy Instrument (BMVI). This effort follows incidents of Ukrainian drones targeting Russian sites that strayed into Finnish territory. Additionally, Finland has signed a 546.8 million euro deal to purchase surplus K9 self-propelled howitzers from South Korea, part of a long-term modernization effort to enhance army firepower and artillery support capabilities.
Confidence: High
The signal reports Finland's defensive procurement and funding applications to counter drone threats on its border, not hostile acts by Finland itself.
