NATO: Kremlin-backed actors’ disinformation seeks to derail green investment

The Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit commented on NATO's 2024 Climate Change and Security Impact Assessment Report, which exposes Kremlin-backed disinformation efforts aimed at sabotaging climate mitigation and renewable energy efforts within NATO members. Jess Ralston emphasized these campaigns create divisions by promoting false narratives, particularly around switching from fossil fuels to renewables, diminishing support for green technologies like heat pumps and offshore wind. The report finds that Russia’s denial of anthropogenic climate change is linked to its fossil fuel dependency and political control, portraying Russia as the primary source of hostile communications against the green transition on social platforms during a one-year period up to May 2024. The disinformation aligns with Russia’s economic interest in preventing energy diversification in Europe and maintaining fossil fuel dependencies.
