Lithuanian border guards intercepted a homemade drone flying from Belarus on May 23, 2026, near the Lithuania-Belarus border in the Šalčininkai district. The drone was detected after a report from the Lithuanian Air Force, CCTV operators spotted the UAV flying towards the state border, and border guards used equipment to disrupt it, causing the drone to crash near the village of Dumblés. The drone was found 500 meters from the border, badly damaged and without cargo. Since the beginning of 2026, 18 drones carrying contraband from Belarus have been intercepted by Lithuanian authorities; in 2025, 59 UAVs were intercepted. Additionally, in the Utena district of Lithuania bordering the Vitsebsk region of Belarus, red alerts were issued on May 20 and May 21 due to drone threats, with local authorities activating sirens and advising residents to take shelter.
Confidence: High
The drone was homemade and used to approach and cross Lithuanian airspace from Belarus carrying contraband, indicating hostile hybrid warfare tactics involving UAV surveillance and smuggling operations.
